PESA (Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration)

Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA) is used as a part of assisted reproductive treatment for infertility.

The PESA procedure is done for patient under the following conditions

⤍  Presence of obstruction

⤍  Congenital absence of the vas deferens

⤍  Insufficient sperm production

⤍  Failure of vasectomy reversal

Under this procedure, the physician penetrates the scrotum and epididymis with the help of a fine needle. He then extracts the sperm into a syringe. The sperm retrieved from the fluid is brought to the laboratory and prepared for use in fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization and Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The major advantage of PESA is that it is easy to perform and in most cases does not require anesthesia so it is considered a minimally invasive technique. The epididym's form makes it easy to locate and penetrate, which makes the procedure effortless and less painful. Another important benefit is the high concentration of sperm collected from the epididymal fluid.

At Rathnaa Fertility Centre, Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA) is performed under local anesthetic. Our success rate is almost 90% and it is most effective for patients with the problem of obstructive azoospermia. For more information on PESA, speak to our consultant today!
