MESA (Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration)

Microsurgical epidiymal sperm aspiration is considered the best method for retrieving sperm from men who have a blockage of the reproductive tract or vasal obstruction. This is a surgical sperm retrieval procedure where an operating microscope is used to locate the tubules of the epididymis that helps in extracting large number of sperms. This procedure is mainly used for cases of obstructive azoospermia.

Under this procedure, a half inch incision is made in the skin of the scrotum so that it becomes easy to locate the epididymis. A fine needle is used to obtain the sperm through gentle suction. The MESA procedure is done under general or local anesthetic with IV sedation and is outpatient, so you can go home the same day. The sperms collected under this method are then used in ICSI to fertilize the egg. The MESA treatment procedure has a lot of advantages over other method. The sperm collected through this procedure will be of impeccable quality. As more number of sperms are collected it can be used for many IVF or ICSI procedures. It has the lowest rate of complications and pain. It is also considered the safest and most cost-effective sperm retrieval method.
